TSA Gateside for Families: Rules, Costs and Airport Access

You can have active TSA PreCheck benefits and still arrive without an approved Gateside visit. Check the airport, date and every visitor before paying for parking. That is what turns a hopeful gate goodbye into a workable family plan.

Gateside lets eligible, approved non-travelers enter participating airports beyond security. You can accompany a departing relative, meet an arriving traveler or share part of a layover. You still need screening, and the approval is not permission to board an aircraft.

Start with three checks that can stop the visit

  1. The airport: Find the actual airport in the current application. A national rollout announcement is not confirmation that your requested date or checkpoint has space.
  2. The people: Check each adult's qualifying benefits and Known Traveler Number, or KTN. Include accompanying children through the current registration process.
  3. The approval: A submitted request is not an approved visit. Verify the result before the household leaves home.

Start from TSA's official Gateside page and use its application link. Keep personal identifiers inside the official process. A family group chat can hold the meeting plan without holding everyone's KTN or identity documents.

Our public-source check: why 13 and 314 both appear

Read the date beside the airport count

The September 25 Telos guide describes the initial 13 airports. Tulsa's expansion announcement reports 301 additional airports joining on October 2, 2026: 314 in total. The difference reflects the announcements' timing; neither list substitutes for checking your own visit.

There is also a local capacity condition. San José's published Gateside page lists 75 passes per day, per checkpoint. That is an SJC condition, not a nationwide quota. A participating airport can still have limited availability.

This was a comparison of published information, not a test of an application or an airport visit. We did not book a slot, inspect a private dashboard or measure a security line. The useful result is a verification method: compare publication dates, then check the location-specific conditions.

Family registration: do not borrow the boarding-pass rules

An adult cannot use a spouse's membership. Telos describes adding adult companions with their own KTNs; eligible members of another qualifying trusted traveler program, such as Global Entry, may use their KTN or PASSID. Check active benefits before buying another membership.

Children must be included on the approved registration. Be especially careful with teenagers: San José's Gateside FAQ says children under 17 can be added. TSA's ordinary family PreCheck guidance includes children 17 and under with its boarding-pass conditions. A non-flying visitor has a different application.

For a 17-year-old, confirm the Gateside portal's current requirement or ask TSA before assuming the child can join without a separate qualifying record. Do not infer a nationwide visitor age rule from an airline boarding-pass policy or one airport's wording.

Make a private party list with each person's name, age where required, qualifying status and registration status. One approved adult does not establish that everyone waiting beside them at the checkpoint is included. Reconcile the list with the approved party before driving.

Enrollment time and visit time are separate clocks

San José's September 30 launch notice confirms the Gateside application window: at least one day before the visit and no more than three days ahead. Same-day Gateside applications are not the plan to rely on.

For an illustrative November 8 visit, plan to request the date November 5–7, subject to what the portal actually offers. Put a reminder on your calendar, then check approval separately. The window is not a promise that every slot remains available throughout those dates.

New PreCheck enrollment is a different process. TSA's enrollment FAQ says most applicants receive a KTN in three to five days, while some applications take up to 60 days. Do not begin enrollment three days before a farewell and assume those benefits will be ready for Gateside.

If your visit is near and you are not already eligible, investigate the airport's independent visitor program or ask the airline about an available escort pass. Verify those procedures separately. Paying an enrollment fee does not reserve access to a particular departure.

The fee is zero; the first outing may cost much more

Gateside has no additional application fee for eligible visitors. If you need new membership, IDEMIA's enrollment page lists $79.75 for five years at this review. Provider prices and renewal charges differ. This is one published enrollment price, not a universal fee or a claim that it is the lowest offer.

Dividing that amount can help compare repeated use: $79.75 ÷ 5 is $15.95 a year, and $79.75 ÷ 60 is approximately $1.33 a month. Four approved visits per year over five years means 20 visits, giving a $3.99 membership allocation per adult visit.

You pay the enrollment fee upfront. Those divisions are planning allocations, not installment payments or gate charges. They assume the stated visits and continuing availability; fewer visits increase the allocated amount.

Our constructed budget: $12 parking per outing and $18 food per adult
SituationFirst outing cash costAllocated comparison
One existing eligible adult$12 + $18 = $30.00$30.00; no new enrollment expense
One new adult; 20 visits assumed$79.75 + $12 + $18 = $109.75$3.99 + $12 + $18 = $33.99 per visit
Two new adults; 15 joint outings assumed$159.50 + $12 + $36 = $207.50$10.63 + $12 + $36 = $58.63 per joint outing

These parking and meal amounts are invented all-in budgets, not airport quotes. The two-adult example shares one parking charge. Fifteen joint outings mean three outings per year for five years; the membership allocation is $159.50 ÷ 15.

For your own budget, use the actual parking duration, transport and meals you expect to buy. If you skip food, remove it; if two cars arrive, count both parking charges. Existing members can evaluate the additional outing expense without assigning the full old membership purchase to this one goodbye.

CBP lists Global Entry's application fee at $120 and membership at five years. Evaluate its international-arrival benefits if you need them. A higher membership fee is not evidence of better Gateside access.

Check the local alternative before buying membership

Tulsa keeps its separate, free TUL Visitor Pass program. Its published rules allow applications on the visit day or up to seven days ahead, subject to availability and TSA approval. Visitors use standard screening rather than PreCheck.

Its document process differs too: Tulsa accepts printed visitor passes. Every participating person, including minors, needs a separate registration; read the program's family instructions before applying. Do not mix those requirements with Gateside's party registration and live dashboard.

For a one-off visit, a free local program can avoid a new membership expense if its timing and screening work for you. Gateside does not create a financial break-even point against another zero-fee pass simply because you divide enrollment across many visits.

The possible benefit is access, convenience and other flying benefits you will actually use. Price those separately from the sentimental value of time at the gate. Airports without a local alternative require a different decision.

Prepare the phone, ID and route before the checkpoint

San José's FAQ says to bring accepted ID and be ready to show the live portal dashboard on a mobile device; screenshots and printouts are not accepted for Gateside. It also excludes Gateside visitors from Touchless ID lanes. Follow your airport's current directions.

Open your account before leaving, confirm that authentication works and charge the phone. Keep the approved party visible when children accompany you. If you cannot access approval, resolve the problem through the official help route rather than assuming a screenshot will substitute.

Check the actual arrival or departure terminal and whether your meeting point is reachable from the visitor entrance. A shared airport name does not establish an easy route between every concourse. Ask about the route that matters for the flight, not merely whether the airport participates.

Review the current screening rules for anything you carry. You are entering a secure area even though you are not flying. Keep the bag simple, and verify permitted items before bringing food, gifts or liquids for the traveler.

A three-hour layover is not three hours together

Here is a separate planning example, not observed airport performance. The traveler's scheduled arrival is noon, departure is 3:00 p.m., and boarding begins at 2:20 p.m. Assume the traveler reaches the meeting point at 12:15 p.m.

The visitor starts parking at 12:30 p.m. Allow a hypothetical 10 minutes for parking, 20 for screening and 15 for walking. The visitor reaches the meeting point at 1:15 p.m., leaving 65 minutes before boarding begins. An extra 20-minute delay reduces that shared window to 45 minutes.

Replace every assumption with your route and the airline's boarding information. Calculate from when both people can meet, then stop at the traveler's boarding obligation. Allow a margin for walking back; do not spend every remaining minute at a restaurant farther from the gate.

For an international arrival, Gateside does not open restricted immigration or customs areas. Ask where the arriving traveler can meet you after the required process. Lounge entry has separate conditions, so terminal access alone does not establish lounge admission.

Airport references: a verified publication list, not all 314

Tulsa's October 1 announcement reports 314 participating airports after the October 2 expansion. We could verify published names for the following 15. This is a partial reference list, not the full 314-airport roster or a confirmation of today's available slots.

The original 13 are named in Telos's September 25 guide; San José and Tulsa have their own October launch notices. Airport names follow the cited publications. An airport absent from this table is unverified here, not necessarily excluded from Gateside.

To check the expanded network, start at TSA's official Gateside page, follow Apply, sign in through Login.gov and inspect the airport choices for your intended visit. Confirm the airport code, party and date; an airport's presence alone is not approval.

Choose the visit you can actually complete

An already eligible household can start with date availability and the extra outing expense. A household considering enrollment should first check its local alternative and future flying use. A family with unresolved teenage eligibility should settle registration before choosing a meeting plan.

Keep one landside backup location that everyone can find. Write down the flight, terminal, meeting point, approved date, arrival plan and the time to abandon the gate meeting if it stops working. Share the logistics without forwarding private account credentials.

San José's launch notice says approval is valid for one calendar day with re-entry on that date. A delay past midnight should trigger a new check; do not assume approval becomes a rolling 24-hour entitlement. Match the visit to the conditions actually approved.

Your final check is practical: every visitor included, approval accessible, accepted ID ready, route confirmed and budget understood. If one piece remains unresolved, use the backup rather than making the traveler responsible for fixing it at boarding time.
